The GAPS Diet Explained: A Natural Gut Healing Protocol for Families

Have you ever wondered why your child struggles with eczema, allergies, or tummy troubles, even when you’re doing “all the right things” with their diet?

What if the missing piece isn’t what they’re eating, but how their gut is functioning?

I get it. As a mum, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child suffer and confusing when the doctors don’t give clear answers. I’ve been there too, feeling overwhelmed by information and desperate to find something that actually works.

That’s when I discovered the GAPS Nutritional Protocol, created by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.

What is the GAPS Diet?

GAPS stands for:

  • Gut and Psychology Syndrome

  • Gut and Physiology Syndrome

These names come from Dr Natasha’s books, which explain how the gut and its resident bacteria can affect the brain, the immune system, and the entire body.

In simple terms: when the gut is damaged, it affects everything. Digestion, immunity, mood, learning, and even behaviour are all connected to gut health.

The GAPS Protocol is designed to heal and seal the gut lining while restoring a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria. It’s not just a diet — it’s an approach that uses food as medicine to help the body tap back into its innate ability to heal.

Why Gut Healing Matters

Here’s the truth: when the gut lining is compromised, even the healthiest meals don’t get absorbed the way they should. The body is starved of essential nutrients, while harmful bacteria thrive.

This can look like:

  • Skin flare-ups (eczema, rashes, allergies)

  • Digestive struggles (bloating, constipation, diarrhoea)

  • Behavioural or learning difficulties

  • Constant colds or infections

  • Emotional ups and downs like anxiety or low mood

Most people try to treat these symptoms directly — but the GAPS protocol addresses the root cause: gut damage and imbalance.

How Does the GAPS Diet Work?

The GAPS Protocol provides a step-by-step roadmap that makes gut healing practical and doable.

It focuses on:

  • Nutrient-dense foods – like homemade meat stock, eggs, good quality meats, vegetables, and healthy fats.

  • Probiotic-rich foods – such as fermented vegetables and cultured dairy to restore beneficial bacteria.

  • Avoiding trigger foods – including processed foods, grains, and starchy carbs that feed harmful bacteria.

  • Supporting body's detox system - like juicing, sun bathing, dry skin brushing, detox bath, and enema.

Full GAPS vs. GAPS Intro

There are two ways to follow the GAPS diet:

  • Full GAPS – A gentler, longer-term approach. Most families begin here to “learn the ropes” and adjust to a new way of cooking and eating.

  • GAPS Intro – A more intensive phase where the deepest healing occurs. This stage is specifically designed to heal and seal the gut lining, but it can feel like a big leap for beginners.

Both pathways are powerful, but the right starting point depends on your family’s current situations, diet and needs.

Who Has GAPS Helped?

Thousands of families worldwide have used GAPS as a natural approach to support conditions like:

  • Eczema and allergies

  • Asthma

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Digestive disorders (IBS, constipation, diarrhoea)

  • ADD/ADHD and learning challenges

  • Anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns

  • Arthritis and chronic infections

Healing with GAPS is always bio-individual — meaning no two journeys look the same. But the framework gives your body the best chance to restore balance and wellbeing.

Where to Begin?

A good starting point is reading Dr Natasha’s books:

  • Gut and Psychology Syndrome

  • Gut and Physiology Syndrome

These resources provide a deep dive into the science and philosophy behind GAPS so you can feel confident before you start.

And remember — this isn’t about perfection overnight. It’s about small, consistent steps that rebuild your child’s (and your family’s) health from the inside out.
